Default Earthquake Watch

A thread to post details and news of eartghquakes as they happen. Any major ones affecting travel we will continue to have separate threads.

Gulf Coast Eartquake

The largest earthquake to strike the eastern Gulf of Mexico in the last 30 years sent shock waves from Louisiana to southwest Florida Sunday, but did little more than rattle residents.

The magnitude 6.0 earthquake, centered about 260 miles southwest of Tampa, was too small to trigger a tsunami or dangerous waves, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The USGS received more than 2,800 reports from people who felt the 10:56 a.m. quake. Scientists said it was the largest and most widely felt of more than a dozen earthquakes recorded in the region in three decades.

"This is a fairly unique event," said Don Blakeman, an analyst with the National Earthquake Information Center who said the quake was unusually strong. "I wouldn't expect any substantial damage, but it is possible there will be some minor damage."
The most prevalent vibration, which lasted for about 20 seconds, was felt on the gulf coast of Florida and in southern Georgia, Blakeman said. But residents in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana also called in reports.

"It rattled our trailer pretty good," said Dan Hawks, who lives near Ocala in the small central Florida community of Pedro. "The house started shaking. We could actually see it moving. We looked at each stupidly and said, 'What's the deal?'"

Florida counties along the Gulf of Mexico called the state emergency operations center with reports of tremors but no damage was reported, spokesman Mike Stone said. Gov. Jeb Bush was informed of the situation, Stone said.

The earthquake likely did not have any effect on oil operations in the Gulf of Mexico, according to Ray Connolly, a spokesman for the American Petroleum Institute, the trade association for the U.S. oil and natural gas industry. Earthquakes are factored into the design of the industry's equipment both onshore and offshore, Connolly said.

The epicenter is an unusual location for earthquake activity, but scientists recorded a magnitude 5.2 temblor in the same location on Feb. 10.

Moderate earthquake shakes Wellington

A MAGNITUDE 5.2 quake struck central New Zealand yesterday but police said there were immediate reports of injury or damage.

The moderate quake shook upper South Island and the southern North Island region round the capital Wellington.

Geological agency GNS Science said the quake centred 190km underground and 50km out to sea west of the city of Nelson on South Island, striking at 6.02pm local time (4pm AEST).

New Zealand sits above two colliding tectonic plates and experiences more than 14 thousand earthquakes each year.

Some 150 are felt by residents and less than 10 cause any damage.

6.7 Quake Near Samoa Generates Small Tsunami

A massive earthquake struck Thursday under the Pacific Ocean floor near Samoa generating a tsunami that could have been destructive if it had been closer to land, authorities said. No damage was reported.
U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake as having a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 and striking 27 miles beneath the sea floor about 185 miles southwest of Pago Pago at about 7:20 p.m. local time.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported the temblor as magnitude 7 and recorded an 3-inch rise in sea levels near the epicenter.
"Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated," the center said in a bulletin posted on the Internet. "It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter."

An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 hit 45 kilometers (25 miles) off the coast of the South Pacific island nation of the Solomon Islands, spurring a tsunami warning for Hawaii. The quake took place at 7:39 a.m. Solomon Islands time, close to the coastal settlement of Gizo, in the Solomon's New Georgia archipelago. Its epicenter was 345 kilometers from the nation's capital, Honiara, the U.S. Geological Survey said in an e-mailed alert.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Honolulu, issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii, though said there was no threat of destruction to the U.S. state. Some coastal areas could experience unusual currents and changes in sea levels, the center said on its Web site.
These effects will probably start to be felt about 6:33 p.m. on April 1 in Hawaii, according to the center. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties in the Solomon Islands or Hawaii.
