We were recently on our way home from a daughter's house after spending a long weekend there, when the First Mate was going over the list of things we had to do within a couple of days of getting home. She finally said, "There's a lot of appeal to just moving to a new location. That way we could sever at once all of the connections that put demands on our time. Then we could do what we want while reestablishing ties in a more planned and orderly fashion."

We're not going to do that, of course, but there is some appeal. Do your friends, relatives, and others with whom you have regular contact tend to expect you to do more for them now that "you're retired and have nothing to do?" If you can't say no, and that's hard for some of us, that can really put a kink in your travel chain, especially your spontaneity.

Your wife made a good point! Never thought of moving as a way to manage obligations. I haven't retired yet although I could do so easily. I think that I enjoy my life so much now that I'm afraid it won't be as good after. I'm sure there would be more requests for babysitting but that's not a bad thing.

Spain and Italy are ideal for a lengthy tour. I've known many travel round Spain for three months and still find lots they'd like to see in the future. France is also worth considering, particularly as hotels are so cheap compared with other countries.
All three countries offer the ideal combination of relaxing by a beach and as much culture as you could wish for.
