Tour operators challenge air tax Tour operators have launched a legal challenge to the Government's Air Passenger Duty. The tax was doubled at the beginning of February, ranging from £10 for an economy class short-haul flight to £80 for a first class long-haul flight. The Conservatives said at the time that the new tax was not legal because it had been introduced within eight weeks of being announced by the Chancellor. They also pointed out that it had not yet been debated in parliament. If the action by the Federation of Tour Operators is successful then the government could be forced to scrap the tax altogether. It could also mean the government having to pay back more than £2bn that has been collected since 2004. (BBC News) |
