Default Quake prompts tsunami bulletin

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake centered about 22 miles (35 km) undersea near the Santa Cruz Islands in the south Pacific erupted at 12:05 p.m. (3:05 a.m. GMT)Sunday, prompting a tsunami bulletin for the region, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake's center was about 275 miles (440 km) east-southeast of Kira Kira, San Cristobal, Solomon Islands and 1,370 miles (2200 km) northeast of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, the USGS said.

There was not immediate information about damage.
Seismic analysis indicated the earthquake "may be the kind of earthquake that ruptures more slowly and has an increased potential to generate tsunami waves that could be damaging near the epicenter," the tsunami information bulletin said
