We drove 4200 miles this past summer touring the US. We just paid attention to the speed limit signs and otherwise minded our own business.

Absolutely agree, Captain. I usually travel a bit over the speed limit on the interstate using my cruise control. Stay in the right lane, except when passing and try to never lane hop. The only tickets I have ever got (3 in forty-seven years of driving) were off the interstate.
