Default Driving around...

Do any of you drive for recreation? I love getting in the car with some good tunes and friends and just hitting the road. Yeah we'll sometimes pick a destination but most of the fun is the trip there. It doesn't even have to be some place far away, it could be some place close by.

If you do drive, do you have take a different car?

I like driving on vacation, I've driven alot through the Southwest .. but I always drive with a destination in mind. One week on a driving trip, I drove 3,000 miles!

We always rent a car when we drive. No use ruining my own car!

I used to drive for work and relaxation.

I would drive the lorry (semi) all day, then go home, put the dogs in the car and make up a packed meal and drive from Northamptonshire to Inverness, Scotland overnight and be back at work in plenty of time in the morning, a round trip of around 700 miles or so.

Unfortunately I was forced to give up driving completely last year on medical grounds, so I don't get out anywhere near as much now.

I travelled mostly by car for many, many years in my business. When I first retired I wanted to fly everywhere but this past summer I finally got into the car again and drove 4200 miles over 46 days touring the U.S.

In 1993, I vacationed in California, and in one week, I also put over 3,000 miles on a rental car. My base was in Canoga Park, in the San Fernando Valley, and from there I drove to the Grand Canyon, stayed in Flagstaff, drove down to Scottsdale and Phoenix, the Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, Yosemite Nat'l Park, Sacramento, Napa Valley, San Francisco, and back to Canoga Park.

While most of my driving is "point-to-point", get there as quickly as possible, driving, I have at times in the past taken self-driving tours. I've done that two ways also.

Several years ago we attended a wedding in Connecticut. Following the wedding we continued with a ten-day driving tour of New England. We had no reservations, just a vague idea of where we wanted to go and what we wanted to see. Some 1,200 miles later we were back home having experienced a lot of interesting things, like a cruise on Cosco Bay out or Portland, Maine, the cog-railroad ride to the top of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire, a ferry boat ride across Lake Champlaine from Vermont to New York, the Adorondaks, the Finger Lakes, etc.

More recently we did a two-week driving tour of Ontario and Michigan. For this one I had reservations and everything planned practically to the minute. But we planned in enough "free time" to stop and enjoy the little surprises we discovered.

I enjoy driving tours, but I have come to really appreciate the logistic support given by organized, packaged tours. That is especially true if I am going to an area other than North America.

I agree that a packaged tour does have advantages. I've done a few and I've enjoyed them. They are great if traveling alone and, I've made many new friends ! I went on one to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, one all over Italy and a wonderful one through the National Parks in the west. In May I'll go to Ireland, Wales and Scotland.
