 Mexico coming up as worldwide meeting center
Mexico, which ranked 11th worldwide as a preferred choice for international meetings this year, is an up-and-coming convention destination.
As recently as 2003, Mexico was ranked 27th in the industry standard market report released by the International Congress and Convention Association.
About 20 million business and leisure travelers visit Mexico each year.
The country's varied meeting options include 38 convention centers in 25 cities, 26 destinations for incentive travel, 245,000 hotel rooms for conventions and 58 international airports.
One new facility is the Centro Banamex in Mexico City. It can accommodate up to 5,000 with 550,000 square feet of space.
Mexico has an advantage for US meeting planners in its status as a favored tax country.
