Men are still travelling almost double the distance than women for business, according to new research out from Barclaycard Business. Women currently travel on average 335 miles a week whilst their male counterparts cover 662 miles. They also spend fewer days per week (2.2 days for women versus 2.5 days for men) and fewer nights a month (3.8 nights for women versus 4.3 nights for men) away on business.
This can be partly explained by the low proportion of female managers in the UK, which presently stands at just above 30%. However, findings from the tenth annual Barclaycard Business Travel Survey, which this year also looks ahead to the business travel climate in 2015, suggest that this gender gap is set to change, with the proportion of female managers in the UK forecasted to reach 50% by 2015.
As this increases and women move into managerial roles, they are likely to spend more time away on business and equal miles clocked up by their male counterparts.
Tim Carlier of Barclaycard Business comments, "Women accounted for just 12% of managers in the early nineties but this is likely to reach 50% by 2015. This change represents a real opportunity for the business travel industry to move with the times and develop their services. As women continue to break `the glass ceiling`, business travel providers across the board must be prepared to address their different requirements."
The Barclaycard Business Travel Survey has also found considerable differences between the needs and preferences of men and women whilst away from home:
* When asked their preferred methods of business travel, just 32% of women cited the car (compared to 38% of men) whilst 39% chose the train (versus 30% of men)
* Almost a third (32%) of women say tidier and cleaner interiors would encourage them to use rail services more often (versus 28% of men)
* 16% of women`s rail travel is taken in first class or business carriages compared to 23% of men`s
* The most popular method of check-in for women at the airport is the kiosk (28%) compared to 24% of men. Men prefer traditional check-in desks (29%), compared to 25% of women
* Just 48% of women have used a budget hotel in the last year (compared to 62% of men). More than a third (34%) of those who have not attribute it to the lack of extras and facilities
* 76% of women enjoy travelling for business. Variety is the reason given by 70% of women (compared to 65% of men), 59% enjoy the opportunity to see the world (versus to 63% of men) and 44% enjoy the chance to experience a new culture (compared to 52% of men)
