Default Austin looking for record convention year

With its full meeting package in place, Austin, Texas is set for a record-setting convention-meeting year.

The city now has almost 900,000 square feet of space with an adjacent, 800-room Hilton Austin.

"The tech industry has recovered and the economy is good, so we expect our numbers to continue to increase," said Cynthia Maddox, spokesperson for the local CVB.

Occupancy rates for hotels are around 75%; average room rates are also up about 8% from last year.

The city is adding two new hotels downtown this summer with 449 rooms. The 492-room Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa is also set to open anytime. It will have 60,000 square feet of indoor function space.
