The editors of the American Heritage® dictionaries have compiled a list of 100 words they recommend every high school graduate should know.

"The words we suggest," says senior editor Steven Kleinedler, "are not meant to be exhaustive but are a benchmark against which graduates and their parents can measure themselves. If you are able to use these words correctly, you are likely to have a superior command of the language."

I would say I know about 42 of them ( and most of them not that well either)

A quick scan yielded 65 "hits" and a few more that I know "a" definition for but I'm not sure I'm totally correct.

I guess around half, the thing you have to ask is why kids should know them, a large proportion of the words listed there example: bowdlerize are hardly one you drop into conversation are they?
